The Marshside Calamity occurred on the night of the 26th January1869 when 7 men died while "putting" for shrimps.  A thick fog came
down and the men lost all sense of direction, despite the fog horn (a cow's horn) being blown by someone on the shore.  A fund was set up to provide for the widows and children, erect a fog bell and pay for a man to ring it. Edward's widow Martha was given a payment of £3 from the fund and also received an allowance of 6/- per week for her daughter Selina Hunt (born 1870).
The payments to Martha ceased after she married Richard Marshall, a
farm labourer, on 16th March 1872 at The Fisherman's Chapel, Hawkshead Street (Independent Methodist).
Edward and Martha's daughter, Selina Hunt, married John Wareing, carter, on 5th April 1890 at Mornington Road Weslyan Methodist Church.
Martha had other children with her second husband and was widowed again.  I have found a burial record for Richard Marshall at St Cuthbert's for 4th June 1896 which ties in with his disappearance from the street directories.  Martha disappears from the directories later, but may have remarried as there is no burial record for her at St Cuthbert's.  Unfortunately, because of the problems mentioned previously, St Cuthbert's doesn't actually have a grave location for Edward Hunt and so far we have no inscription for him in the NMFHS database.

This is a work in progress.  I would appreciate knowing when you find errors.
