    Notes
    • Mary Ann Simpson married Alexander Currie hastily on Christmas Eve, 1888, at Liverpool Parish Church, giving an address as Boundary St Liverpool. They were both said to be 20, but Alexander was probably only 18 (b. March 1871).
My grandmother Mary Currie, known as May, was born May 2, 1889, five months later, at 113 Borough Road, Birkenhead.
On March 14, 1891, her sister Jane (known as Jen), was born at 35 Thomas Street, Birkenhead - the home of William Simpson and his family in the census a week or two later.
Alexander Currie was a railway fireman when May was born, and a marine fireman when Jen was born - perhaps away at sea.
I can't find the family in 1901 census, but in 1909 Mary Ann, aged 40, May, aged 20, and Jen aged 19 arrived at Ellis Island, New York en route to New Orleans to stay with Alexander. May and Jen were described as domestic servants.
Mary Ann's nearest relative in England was listed as  Mrs Wellman, sister, of 45 Claughton Road, Birkenhead.
In 1912, Jen emigrated to the States as a lady's maid, and gave her contact in the US as "C. Wellman, 33 Ra…ers Avenue, New York, brother-in-law." (Found this thanks to Clare's appeal for relatives on "genealogy.com which I only discovered three weeks ago.)
May later visited the States three times as May Wellman, but I can't find any British marriage record for her and Claud Wellman, although I have later evidence that they WERE married.
The Claud Wellman I'm sure  he is was b. 1881, at 10 George Street, Birkenhead, to Emma Wellman b. circa 1851 Birkenhead.
In the 1901 census he is listed as single, 20, and a cabinetmaker.
Was Emma really Mary Ann Simpson's sister, as Mary Ann told the immigration authorities? She is not in the list of Simpsons that the Sampson family have discovered. Could she be from an earlier marriage of William's?
During World War One, May Wellman had an affair with an Australian Army officer, Michael Joseph O'Brien, and my father, Gordon John O'Brien, was conceived, and born in September 1918 in Manchester.
I have correspondence from the Australian Army from Michael O'Brien, Claud Wellman, and Claud's solicitors about her confession of adultery and Claud's plans to divorce her. But there is no divorce listed, and when May finally died in 1965 she was said to be "widow of Claud Wellman, cabinetmaker."
Michael O'Brien vanished ( dead or bolted?) around 1921/22, and in May 1922 May Wellman and Gordon (aged three, and listed as Wellman, although his registered name was O'Brien), arrived in New York for a three month stay with Jen.
Jen's married name in the US was Hansen or Hanson, with addresses including 1222 Union St., Brooklyn in 1916 and 143 West 10th St in 1922. After that I lose track of her, although I remember we were in contact with her in the 1950s and I thought they lived in Boston, Mass and had a son. She did come over here in the Fifties, and I am searching for a photo of her and May that I thought I had.
May Wellman continued to live as Mrs Wellman for the rest of her life, but in 1929, she had a second son, Ronald, born in Heswall, who has no father listed. May was listed as May Wellman, nee Currie, a hairdresser.  The baby was known as Ron Wellman, and married in the 1950s and had three sons, Paul, David and Christopher, in the Sixties, with whom we have lost touch. Ron died in about 1985.
In the 1940s, 50s and 60s, May lived at 12 Kenmore Road, Prenton, Birkenhead, and she died on December 10, 1965, in St. Catherine's Hospital, Birkenhead.
I have had no luck tracking either birth or death records for Michael Joseph O'Brien. He told the Australian Army he was born in March 1893 near Goulburn, New South Wales, but is not in the register. And there is no death record in Australia, either. The only death record I have found is in Liverpool in 1926 for a man of approximately the same age who died of TB in poor circumstances. Michael was a winner of the Military Cross and other decorations in World War One, rising through the ranks to become an officer in the Machine Gun Corps, and was twice wounded. He took a compassionate discharge at the end of the war to offer May Wellman his support and protection during her divorce, and planned to set up a business in Manchester.
Their son, Gordon O'Brien, married my mother,  war widow Jean  Llewellyn, nee Halliday, in May 1948, and I was born in May 1949. My sister, Victoria Mary O'Brien, was born in  June 1952.
I married in 1968 Graham William Cooper, and have one daughter, Amanda Elizabeth Cooper (now Bloomfield), b. 1970. She and her husband have one child, Rebecca Emily Bloomfield, aged seven, born in 1999.
Victoria (Vicki) has been married twice, to Philip Waring, and now to John Ithell, and has no children.
My father, Gordon O'Brien, died aged 54 on Christmas Day 1972, and my mother on August 9, 1995.
