    • He resigned his post at Manchester University in 1944 to continue his work with the Quakers, and after training at Mount Waltham in London he was sent to SW France in Feb 1945 and was to work amongst prisoners of war at camps in Bordeaux and Toulouse. He was accompanied by a Dutch noblewoman, Guilhelmina Catharina Arnaudina Bleuland (Toot) van Oordt who had worked for Friend's in Paris before joining the work in the South of France.

By autumn 1945, they had over 30,000 prisoners in their region and in Oct that year, a meeting of Secours Quaker 'top brass' in Paris decided they should concentrate their efforts on prisoners of war, and were released from all other duties.

Stanley was a Concientous Objector, and his political views were at the opposite end to those held by his sister Doris (my Grandmother). In a letter to her, on publication of his booklet on Quaker Work in 1990, he writes 'Your agreement with what I have written is not asked - it is historical, not political.
